Mauna Kea Resort Experiences
Mauna Kea Art Collection
ART TOUR
Hundreds of museum-quality art objects from the Pacific and Asia are displayed throughout Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, collected by hotel founder Laurance S. Rockefeller. The expansive collection spotlights Pacific Rim culture and spirituality, from Ainu kimono and glittery Thai icons to Maori canoe prows, bronze Indian chests, and wooden carvings. Hawaiian culture is also featured prominently through displays of traditional kapa (pounded bark) cloth, Hawaiian quilts, and kii (wooden images).
Art pieces are positioned informally throughout the hotel and grounds, where guests can discover and experience them up close. A complimentary 75-minute art tour begins in the hotel lobby each Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. and shares more detail about the collection and its history.
Mauna Kea Golf Course
This Hawaii golf resort’s award-winning, 18-hole championship golf course has set the standard for Hawaii golf for generations. Created in 1964 by Robert Trent Jones Sr. on what was once a barren black lava field, today’s lush fairways tumble across seaside cliffs with unfolding ocean and coastal views. Elevated, undulating greens and prevailing coastal winds demand accuracy, while an epic over-the-ocean 3rd hole guarantees an unforgettable day of play.

Cultural Activities
It all Begins with Aloha
Hawaiian Hula lessons will move you to the rhythms of the island as your hands tell a graceful story. A variety of classes such as lei making, ukulele, Hawaiian throw-net fishing and yoga are complimentary, or offered at nominal charge.
Kauna’oa Bay
Mauna Kea Beach Hotel sits on one of the few white-sand beaches on the Kohala Coast – Kauna’oa Bay. Unlike most beaches on the island, which are formed from coral or lava, the sand here is silica.
The shape and terrain of the bay make it a perfect haven for relaxing, swimming and paddling. There is also a raft moored mid-bay. Mornings are often the best time for ocean activities, while the wind is light and the waters calm. Summer months don’t usually see much surf, but on a big swell during winter months, the waves sometimes break across the entire bay. Both points have fun surf spots and when a sandbar forms, it makes for great bodysurfing and boogie boarding.
Mauna Kea Manta Moonlight Snorkel
Enjoy a private snorkel tour with the Mauna Kea Mantas and enjoy the manta rays in their natural habitat. Don’t miss the opportunity to be guided by the researcher that has studied these gentle giants for 26 years.
