Some of the most dramatic scenery is only accessible by boat and helicopter tour – the Napali coastline has some of the most beautiful coastlines in all of Hawaii, and a must-see in Kauai. In Kauai, you can hike, see waterfalls, beautiful gardens, beaches, and watch dolphins (Napali Coast). There is very little nightlife in Kauai, so be prepared to have quiet evenings. Also, there are no big towns or touristy areas for shopping like in Waikiki, or Lahaina Maui. Its smaller pockets of shopping/ dining areas around the island. We call Kauai the “beach picnic island” because there are so many neat beaches and secluded spots you can drive to with a picnic for two, and then let the magic begin.
There are great hikes from some of these beaches, and there are some great snorkel spots and places to see sea turtles. You can drive your car and explore this amazing island.
Mahaulepu Beach – close to Grand Hyatt Kauai resort
Mahaulepu Beach is located along an isolated and windswept coast this magical stretch of coastline is so deserving of preservation. The Mahaulepu Beach Heritage Trail leads you from the East end of Shipwrecks beach along a coastline of sand dunes, lava tubes, tide pools and stretches of white sand beaches perfect for beachcombing. Mahaulepu Beach is better suited for the experienced swimmer and snorkeler. Stronger trade winds on this stretch of coastline make it a haven for windsurfer and experienced kite-boarders. This section of coastline includes a variety of landscapes to explore including; lava tubes, sandstone cliffs, blowholes and isolated coves that make this a fantastic place to discover on foot. Polihale Beach – One of the longest stretches of beach in Kauai
Drive can be a bit crazy, dirt/gravel road for 20 minutes but worth it if you have the time:
Polihale Beach is by far the longest stretch of beach in the state of Hawaii. Polihale Beach and State Park is located at the end of Highway 50 and is accessed down an unpaved old cane haul road. The seventeen mile stretch of white sand beach and sand dunes offer endless beach-combing and shelling fun. Polihale Beach sits at the end of the Napali coast and the edge of the Mana Plains. This is a spectacular stretch of wilderness, with 100-foot sand dunes, desert cactus and remarkable sunsets over the Forbidden Island of Niihau. This is the last beach on the west side marks the beginning of the Napali Coast. Polihale is hot and shade is far from the edge of the water, so don’t forget an umbrella and lots of water if you plan on spending any time here. Polihale Beach has some facilities and camping is by permit only. Strong currents and no lifeguards make it is a notoriously dangerous beach for swimming. This is a great beach for shelling, long beach walks, and spectacular sunsets.
Waimea Canyon – It is known as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”
It is an easy drive from Poipu. Make sure to stop at the lodge/visitor’s center. Keep your eye out for Hawaii’s State Bird the Nene, a type of goose found only in Hawaii. Take Route 550A and B from Waimea through the Waimea Canyon and into Kokee State Park. Be sure to stop at Kalalau Valley and Puuokila Lookouts for amazing views!
Since you are already in Waimea, continue to the West/North on Route 50 at the end of the road you will continue to drive back through 5 miles of pineapple fields and you will exit onto Polihale Beach in the Polihale State Park. This is an amazing white sand beach that stretches as far as the eye can see!! It is untouched with no resorts, yet the state has provided facilities for camping and day use. Be careful…the wide beach of soft white sand looks inviting, but it is likely to be scorching hot from the sun.
Head north on Route 56 past the North Shore Resorts to Hanalei. Here you will be rewarded with beautiful views of Bali Hai (Lumahai Beach) and the famous pier where South Pacific was filmed still stands in Hanalei Bay. Hanalei is a great little town…with just the right mix of locals and visitors, great cafes to eat in and shave ice to cool off with.
The public beach access is on each end of town, this is an awesome beach…on some days the bay is as calm as can be, and other days you will be able to watch some of the top surfers in the world. (Three-time World Surfing Champion Andy Irons and his younger brother Bruce call this wave home!) Continue west over one-lane bridges, past smaller and smaller towns, and many lovely little beaches.
Hanalei – the cutest small town on the North Shore of Kauai
This is the place where Puff the magic dragon comes from, and you’ll see reference to many dragons. I love this place, lots of good little cafes to eat in, have a block of shave ice to cool off. The public beach access is at each end of the town. The one on the east end of town is a nice wide beach, many body surfers along here. Good body surfing….rent a board from a shop in town. The dock to the right is where they filmed a lot of scenes in the South Pacific. Not much shade here except up by the public restrooms. There is a nice shower facility here to rinse off all the sand. This is a beach where many celebrities have homes, including David Crosby and Graham Nash ( singer-songwriters). The public beach access at the far end of town has more trees and some picnic tables. It is farther away from the main beach area.
Continue west to smaller and smaller towns, many one-lane bridges, lovely beaches, many of them quite private. Tunnel is a beautiful beach, parking is hard to find but not impossible (you just have to park along the road). We saw large sea turtles frolicking in the waves here last year. Kee Beach is the last beach where the Napali trails for hiking begin. Of course, you can take a boat or helicopter to see this area as well.
